M.A.N.D.Y. gives Watergate a ‘Full Body Workout’…Berlin Music Days or BerMuDa, has been the festival on everyone minds the last few weeks and anyone who has been in the German capital this week would have been touched by the festival in one way, shape or form. The festival itself had a successful start in 2009, created by the originators of the worldwide renowned Watergate Club. Steffen Hack, Ulrich Wombacher and Niklas Eichstädt thought it was time to establish an authentic festival for electronic music, which originated from Berlin’s clubs. With 40 different locations, over 100 DJs and a stack of daily events all part of the BerMuDa festival, you can start to understand how it would have touched many people.
A notable factor in the countless number of events happening through-out the capital has been the amount of record labels taking over numerous locations to hold their own events. Watergate in particular was overrun almost every day of the week by Souvenir, Bpitch, Mobillee and Moon Habour, boasting line ups that would blow your ears off; Tiefschwarz, Ellen Allien, Kiki, Anja Schneider, Matthias Tanzmann, Miss Jools, Chloé and Thomas Muller. But there was clearly one label, on one night, that was going to make a huge imprint on the week of events. With a line-up of
M.A.N.D.Y., Tim Green, Alexkid, Javier Logares, Siopis, Jona, David Keno and of course Smash TV performing a special live show, which Kai (one half of Smash TV) later said “was probably one of our best live performances so far”, the Get Physical label night at Watergate was leaving no doubts as to, which event was gleaming with potential.
Through a long standing partnership that lasted nearly 10 years with DJ T and Book Shade, M.A.N.D.Y. have carved a unique niche in electronic music by consistently selecting productions for their Get Physical label that induce their audience into a frenzy. The Get Physical label has been a predominant influence on the music scene in terms of the caliber of music, artists and parties it has unleashed on to the scene. And with M.A.N.D.Y., Booka Shade and DJ T all becoming so successful in what they do as DJs, producers and live performers, you could almost say that Get Physical held the title of having one of the most profound artists lists any label would dream of.
Speaking with Patrick (one half of M.A.N.D.Y.) at Watergate, he explained whether each member of this dream team contributed in different ways to the success of the label… “Yeah, you could say like sound-wise, in the sound direction, we each had our own, but also in other aspects of running the label, I think we each brought something very special and important to Get Physical”. You could say that each one has been vital in the success of the label, Philipp’s charm and savy, Patrick’s allusive artistry, DJ T’s entrepreneurial sense and Book Shade’s collaborative genius. All this combining to form a masterful team that pushed the boundaries of dance music. But one does have to ask the question, that although three successful artists names leading the way may be a dream, how can a label work so in sync and successfully when those three successful names, or five individuals, are all at the helm?… “You know, we have this long standing friendship of over 15 years that transformed into a label. It wasn’t only from the outside, but also a real inner circle, free feeling vibe and emotions”, Patrick explained. A friendship that was clearly founded on and shared the same ideas and passion for the music they all love and have come to disburse on to the hundreds of thousands of fans around the world.
The beginning of this year unfortunately saw DJ T and Booka Shade leaving the label… “After nearly 10 years of working together, DJ T and Booka Shade left around the beginning of this year but for good reasons you know. Like Booka Shade, with this crazy artist career, didn’t really have time to focus on the label. There’s a lot of work involved. It’s not all just about sales, it’s not about making money, you’re actually happy if you don’t lose money… but there’s a lot of effort and dedication involved. And they felt that it wasn’t worth continuing to run the label. Thomas really got into a lot of A&R in the last few years and he’s really happy doing what he’s doing now and focusing more on his career. And Book Shade as well are happy to be focusing more on their career”.
M.A.N.D.Y. have been faced with not only a busy touring schedule this year but also with the running of the label, surprisingly enough they seem to be keeping the Get Physical label alive as ever; having over 20 releases so far this year plus the “Full Body Workout Volume 7″, not to meantion M.A.N.D.Y. still finding the time to put together “Body Language Volume 10″. Even though Booka Shade and DJ T many no longer be at the label, M.A.N.D.Y. have still retained a strong caliber of artists releasing on Get Physical. DJ T himself often releasing, along with Audiofly, Martin Dawson, Catz N’ Dogz, Mr C, SIS, Smash TV and Siopis.
M.A.N.D.Y. also seem to have an amazing view on music, their interaction with people is truly remarkable, transmitting their love and energy for the music to the people, not only through the their mixing, through their music, or through their actions and expressions behind the console, but also in the way they speak about the music.
A great example of their dedication and love to the music, would be when asking Patrick about his recent appearance at Bedlam, London, he explained…“I already played at the Bedlam party in Kent a couple years before, which was really good and it was a nice surprised to know that Tim had taken his night to London. I had heard so many good things about the first Bedlam in London at the beginning of the year. So when I had a last minute gig cancellation I agreed to play as a favour to Tim Green and his Bedlam night… and It was amazing, It was totally great. It was this warehouse in London and it had never been used before in the middle of nowhere. We came in and it was a bit like Panorama Bar, great audience with a proper club culture like Bedlam had already been there for years.”
Now, getting back to the Get Physical label party at Watergate on 02 Nov… It makes you wonder that with an intense tour schedule for M.A.N.D.Y. and keeping the Get Physical label alive, it does make you question whether all this has an effect on their DJing performance and the Get Physical party in question…
The answer is very simple… M.A.N.D.Y. alone played some of the most infectious body moving music around that was seamlessly blending together in that unrivaled M.A.N.D.Y. style. And considering this was a Wednesday night, Get Physical and all its artists provided Watergate and its perfectly energised crowd with a ‘full body workout’.
Special Thanks to Corey @ Professional Rockstars, Markus and of course Patrick.
