Majestically balancing the compact electronic sounds with the improvisation of jazz…Words: Dante Kotsinas
The relationship between electronic music and jazz is not at all new. It actually dates back to the 1980′s, when the melding of the first with African American music styles like Chicago house, funk and electronic jazz gave birth to early techno. Those early influences of jazz can be found in the work of artists like Kraftwerk, fuelling later distinctive references to jazz with tracks like “Jazz Is The Teacher” and “High Tech Jazz”.
Prompt’s project however, ‘Prompt Live Band’, fusing electronic sound and jazz, manages to come out as something fresh and even revolutionary, as it manages to majestically balance the compact electronic sounds with the improvisation of Jazz. To those who have been following Prompt’s work since his early steps in the conservatories of Madrid, and to the younger ones who might have discovered him later, this new release should not come as a total surprise. His classical music training becomes apparent in his work and has created a distinctive musical style like with “Onuba”, his recent project, which is a fusion of Flamenco and electronic music.
The three tracks of the Prompt Live Band, released as the “Harmonic Tribes EP” on Highgrade records, are the result of his work together with Victor Tarin on piano, Paco Marquez on saxophone, David White on bass and Daniel Del Val on drums; also known as the ‘Chop Suey Quartet’ who, since its formation in 2008 (in the same place where Prompt started his career –Madrid-) has been producing rather easily digestible but still full of energy music.
Listening to any of these three tracks that Prompt created with them, is bound to, I believe, prompt most listeners to go on with the rest as well as further explore his rich and rather diverse work for he is preparing releases for Souvenir Music, Soma Records and Yoshitoshi while also producing releases for his own 7 Noise.
