Mr Lee Brinx. Say that name to any DJ that knows a thing or two about the house scene and they will instantly start smiling. Starting young, he made his name in the world of garage before moving on to the world of progressive house, before long finding himself out in Ibiza appearing at Space, Privilege, The Zoo project, El Divino and Es Paradis as well as gaining residency at the infamous Milk Bar.
Lower East introduce their latest find…Johnny Mikes has what it takes to catch peoples attention with his cross-pollination of genres and time periods behind the decks. Lower East boasts a bold sounding release by Alexis Raphael accompanied by outstanding remix work…Lower East are proud to introduce the highly anticipated second release from Alexis Raphael. Club soundsystems far and wide are still resonating with the sound of his first release on Jamie Jones and Lee Foss’ critically acclaimed label: Hot Waves. “Spaceship” reached the top 10 in Beatport’s deep house chart and received glowing reviews so what better time to introduce his next offering: “Kitchens and Bedrooms”.
Lower East have gone all out to make this a special package with remixes from Lee Foss, Richy Ahmed & Volante, Russo and a deeper “Sunset Mix” from Alexis Raphael himself. Encompassing elements of deep house, house, disco and electronica, each mix has it’s own bold identity making it a release that has picked up support from James Teej, Josif, Manik, Alex Flitsch, Solomun, Shindoe, Tim Green, Chris Latner, Julien Chaptal, System of Survival, Xpress 2, Huxley and Anthony Collins.
Alexis Raphael’s “Kitchens and Bedrooms” is very much a gentle paced deep affair with a bold bass that punches through soundsystems. This emotional masterpiece is layered with a remarkable smooth swinging vocal and subtle bright tones to really lift the track. The bass is also worked in such a way that it offers plenty of variation between the start of the track, the drop mid way through and the ending, transforming into a more hollow sounding acid squelch. Alexis Raphael is definitely offering a unique deep house sound.
“Alexis’ Sunset Mix” trims a little emphasis off the actual punch of the bass by keeping it constant and introducing some blissful repetitive vocal cuts and opening them up more in the background, whilst laying onto of all this, a beautiful carpet of an organic sound to aid the sunset drift of the mix.
Lee Foss reworks the track into his typical format, expressing the movement of the mix in that Lee Foss slow groove manner. A Deep analogue bass edging on squelch with spacey twinkles and light electronic synths sprinkled throughout, this is a fine addition to the release.
The “Richy Ahmed & Volante Mix” is one that knocks it up a gear in the pace. Providing a well sequenced, hollowed out bass accompanied by low electronic piano stabs. The track builds with the gradual introduction of the vocal cuts, where it then falls into its passive breakdown, playing out the vocal in its full glory. The mix then launches into a very bold session that focuses on that remarkable bass pumping through with its steady pace and a subtle electro delayed feel to it. A powerful interpretation!
The “Russo Mix”, with its deep bass offering a mild hum in its sluggish punch, presents us with a more classic deep house groove offering a gentle swing. This mix brings out an uplifting soulful side of “Kitchen and Bedrooms” that just seems to work perfectly.
Although this is Alexis’ first release on Lower East, he is already a key member of it’s inner circle. Alongside Cozzy, Alexis promotes the much talked about East London event “Creche”. And with regular gigs across the capital he is an established member of the London scene.
